Which Tax Returns Can Be Outsourced?
Most federal return types can be prepared by an offshore team, as long as the team has real experience with the specific form. Below is what CPA firms commonly outsource to us, and what to know about each type.
Individual Returns (Form 1040)
Form 1040 is the most commonly outsourced return, especially at peak season. This includes returns with wages, self-employment income, rental properties, investments, and itemized deductions, along with state returns.
Partnership Returns (Form 1065)
Partnership returns involve allocations, capital accounts, and Schedule K-1s for each partner. Your reviewing preparer should confirm the allocation method and partner details before filing.
Corporate Returns (Forms 1120 and 1120-S)
We prepare C corporation returns (Form 1120) and S corporation returns (Form 1120-S). For S corporations, this includes K-1 allocations, shareholder basis, and multi-state filings where required.
Nonprofit Returns (Form 990)
Tax-exempt organizations file Form 990 and its schedules. Because the right form depends on the organization's size and activity, we confirm the filing requirement with your firm before we start.
Estate and Trust Returns (Form 1041)
Fiduciary returns require tracking income distributions and beneficiary reporting. These returns get extra review attention from your preparer.
Amended Returns
When a filed return needs a correction, we can prepare the amended return and supporting schedules, and your firm reviews and files it.
Expatriate and International Filings
International filings carry more rules and more forms. We support expatriate and cross-border returns that may include Forms 2555, 5471, 5472, and 8938. These forms are often filed with a main return and must be reviewed against the client's full foreign-asset and ownership picture.
FBAR Filing (FinCEN Form 114)
The Foreign Bank Account Report is not an IRS tax return. It is filed separately with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), and the due date does not depend on a client's tax return. We prepare the report, and your firm reviews and files it.
How to Decide What to Outsource
- Start with high-volume, repeatable returns such as 1040s and 1120-S returns.
- Move complex filings, such as international forms and trusts, once you have seen the team's work on simpler returns.
- Always keep final review and sign-off with your own preparer.
This list is for general information. Filing requirements depend on each client's facts, so confirm the right forms for every client.
